Back to topHistory of Henley-on-Thames
Henley-on-Thames can trace its early settlements back to the Roman era. It’s location on the Thames made it a prime destination for early inhabitants. The name "Henley" is believed to have derived from the Old English words "heanne" (high) and "leah" (wooded clearing), and it received its market charter from King John in 1205. The first known bridge was built in 1232, and the establishment of the world-famous regatta was in 1839.
Throughout its history, Henley-on-Thames has retained its picturesque charm, with many historic buildings, including the medieval bridge and various Tudor and Georgian structures, contributing to its character.
