Things to Do Nearby
The almost 1000-year-old Castle is naturally a must-see in Windsor, with fascinating evidence of royal history stretching back to the year 1070! Calling all hopheads, the Windsor and Eton Brewery is close by, a stone’s throw from the river with tours and tastings galore. Thespians won’t be let wanting more with the Theatre Royal, nestled just beside the castle, exhibiting a smorgasbord of shows and stunning Edwardian architecture to boot.
History of Windsor
Windsor initially began as a Saxon village, growing in prominence due to its proximity to the river, the cheapest method of transportation at the time. The decision by William the Conqueror to build his own castle in Windsor stimulated growth further in the town and led to an ongoing 1000-year-old royal presence in the form of Windsor castle. As the population grew, markets began to spring up – Windsor still has a strong culture of markets to this day.
